Granite & Natural Stone from slab yard to sink hookup
Granite varies enormously across a single slab, let alone between slabs. Choosing from a two-inch sample tells you the color family and nothing about the movement, so it is worth going to the yard and tagging the actual piece.
It is porous and it does need sealing, though far less often than people assume — an annual water test on the surface tells you whether it is due, rather than sealing on a calendar for its own sake.

FAQ
Questions on granite & natural stone, answered
Do I need to see the actual granite slab before buying?
Yes. A sample chip shows the color; the slab shows the veining, the movement and the flaws, and no two are the same. You choose the slab at the yard, the fabricator lays out the cuts on that slab so the best of it lands where you look, and the seams are placed where the pattern hides them. Buying granite from a chip is how people end up with a counter that looks nothing like what they chose.
How often does granite need sealing?
Once a year for most, and some dense granites almost never — the test is whether water beads on the surface or soaks in. Sealing takes minutes and it is what keeps oil and wine from marking the stone. Modern sealers last longer than the old advice suggests.
