Cabinets and floors in Columbia homes, and the slab on top
Older kitchens have cabinets that are neither level nor square, and the template visit is where the fabricator finds it; shimming or a cabinet repair comes before the stone.
In an old kitchen the countertop is chosen to suit the house — honed stone, butcher block, soapstone — and the fabricator who works in those materials is the one to send.
The cabinets and the walls the top meets — out-of-square corners, a window sill at counter height, an island on a slab — are what the template records.
The 2000s kitchens came with the builder’s standard granite, and the upgrade is quartz or a better stone with an undermount sink the old top could not take.
The ground reaches a countertop only through the cabinets — a floor that moved with the clay leaves a base that is not level — and the template visit finds it.

What prompts Columbia kitchens to get new tops
Nashville has a genuinely competitive countertop market, which is good for pricing and means the differences between quotes are usually in the details rather than the slab. Edge profile, seam placement, how the undermount reveal is finished and whether removal and plumbing reconnection are included are where two quotes for the same kitchen diverge, and they are worth comparing line by line.
- Wanting an island with seating that the current top cannot support
- Preparing to list, where the kitchen carries the most weight
- Laminate lifting or delaminating at the seams
- A burn, chip or crack you have started working around
Unsupported overhangs. Anything past about a foot of unsupported stone cracks under someone leaning on it. Corbels or steel plate belong in the quote.
