We measure stone countertops from the cabinets once they are set, not from the kitchen drawings, which matches Cosentino’s Silestone installation manual: before detailed measurements are taken, all cabinets should be installed, leveled and in their final position. Cambria’s product care and installation guidance calls for walls and cabinets that are structurally sound, straight, level and square, and it warns that poor preparation can mean a poor seam fit or an uneven overhang, so the fit is taken from what is really in the room. That puts a gap in the schedule between the measure and the install, and it pays to plan around it.

What happens at a countertop template visit?

On our jobs a technician templates the set cabinets digitally and records where the sink and cooktop go, the edge details and where each seam will fall. That visit is the first half of our templating and fabrication service. Cambria lays out the same order for its quartz: according to its countertop replacement planning page, the professional partner takes an official measurement of the space, and the slabs are cut after that.

Have the cabinets installed before we come out. Cambria’s new-build planning page says all cabinets, appliances and other structures must be in place before its countertops can be installed, since the counter sits on top of them. If you are buying a new sink or faucet, Cambria asks that it be on hand at the measure appointment. We ask for a drop-in cooktop as well, because we take the cut-outs from the fixtures going into your kitchen.

The fabrication wait

How long the gap runs depends on the material and on the shop’s schedule, so we give you a date after the template rather than a rule of thumb. Cambria’s replacement page puts the steps in the same sequence: measurement, then cutting, then an installation date along with instructions for getting the space ready.

Until the new tops arrive, the cabinets have nothing on them, so there is nowhere to mount a sink and the kitchen does very little. Put that stretch in the remodel schedule on day one instead of discovering it at the end.

  • Cabinets installed, straight and level before template
  • New sink, faucet and any drop-in cooktop on site for the template visit
  • Ask for the fabrication lead time once the template is done
  • Confirm edge profile and seam placement at template
  • Ask who reconnects the plumbing, and on which day

What to confirm at the visit

Edge profile, seam locations, overhang dimensions, and how the sink is mounted. Seams deserve the closest look: Cambria’s care page states that its quartz is not a seamless product, that seams are visible, and that pattern and shade change where they fall. Our post on where countertop seams go and why walks through the placement choices, and undermount or drop-in is worth reading before the sink question comes up.

We cut from what gets agreed at that visit, so it is the time to change your mind about any of it.

How do you get ready for installation day?

Clear the way before the crew arrives. Cambria’s replacement checklist asks homeowners to clear all walkways and take everything off the counters, the floors and the connecting cabinets, and it says to plan on being home on installation day. Your installer will tell you when the sink can be hooked back up.

Settle the plumbing before the day as well. Reconnecting the sink and faucet is not always part of a countertop job, and it is easier to sort out at the estimate than with the faucet lying on the floor. When you are ready to put a measure date on the calendar, request an estimate from us and we will go over the lead time for the material you choose.

FAQ

From Template to Installation, Step by Step — questions

Why can countertops not be measured from the plans?

Because stone has to fit the cabinets and walls that are actually there. Cambria’s installation guidance asks for walls and cabinets that are straight, level and square, and says poor preparation can lead to a poor seam fit or an uneven overhang, so the fit is measured on site once the cabinets are set. That measurement is why the wait between template and installation exists.

How long between template and installation?

It depends on the material and on the fabricator’s schedule, so ask for the lead time when the template is done and plan the kitchen around it. The cabinets have no countertop during that stretch, so the sink cannot be hooked up. Building the gap into the schedule from the start saves a scramble at the end of a remodel.

Do I need the sink before templating?

Yes. Cambria asks homeowners who are buying a new sink or faucet to have it on hand at the measure appointment. We ask for a drop-in cooktop too, because we take the cut-outs from the fixtures you are installing rather than from a spec sheet, and templating without them means guessing or coming back for a second visit.

What is a countertop template?

It is the exact measurement of your set cabinets and walls that the slabs are cut from. On our jobs a technician records it digitally, along with where the sink and cooktop go, the edge details and where each seam will fall, so the stone fits the room that is actually there.
